In a 2011 interview conducted by Scholastic (wherein I discovered that Rowling is not only a talented writer but also a very entertaining reader – listen 12 minutes in), Rowling was asked – for probably the millionth time – why she thought the Harry Potter series was such a huge success; in past interviews, her typical answer had been something to the effect of “the magic is so fun and the idea of this hidden world is so appealing” . . . but this time, her response was different. She said that, after talking to thousands of fans over the years and gaining some perspective on the books since finishing them, she’s changed her mind and has “come to understand the appeal of [Harry Potter] a little better.” She now believes that her success is primarily because, as she put it:

. . . people fell in love with the characters.
